How much coconut oil should I take internally?

"Dr. Coconut" Bruce Fife and other experts recommend taking to 3.5 tablespoons (UK equivalent 3 dessertspoons)  per day when using as a spread, in cooking and eating raw and in smoothies etc.  If you have never taken coconut oil before, we recommend that on day 1 you take 1 teaspoon in the morning and if no adverse effects* then 2 teaspoons day 2 (you can stagger this 1 teaspoon in the morning then 1 around 4pm if you get an energy low), then listen to your body and build up to levels that suit your body up to what works for you.  Coconut Oil taken in the morning will help boost your metabolism and increase energy levels.

*coconut oil can be a powerful laxative taken in quantity and when you first start using it - you can find that you need to go more as it helps to both detoxify and regulate the bowl. 

Coconut Oil is a saturated fat - I thought saturated fats were bad for you?

Animal saturated fats such as those found in meats work very differently in the body than the saturated fat from the coconut, which is a fruit.  Coconut fat is made up of Medium Chain Fatty Acids (MCFAs) which get converted directly by the liver into energy and NOT stored as fat in the body.  Because coconut also has antibacterial qualities too it is very heart healthy (more and more research is proving that cardiac disease is often caused by low grade bacterial infections and even if you are prone to gum disease this can be dangerous for your heart.  Hence the recommendation to floss everyday)

Does coconut oil need to be kept in the fridge?

No.  Coconut oil is often used in cosmetics and other foods to lengthen shelf life and has a long shelf life - the expiry date is printed on the tub.  Virgin Coconut Oil is the least susceptible to oxidation than any other plant oils.
