English mint
At the beginning of the 20th century, England was renowned for producing the best mint in the world - the French still call peppermint menthe Anglaise, or English mint. Over the years, pressure to grow food crops and the rising cost of labour brought a decline in cultivation, leaving the US to take over the commercial production of oil.
During the last decade, Summerdown has reintroduced traditional Black Mitcham peppermint to this country, relearning lost mint-farming skills from America and combining them with the latest production technology at our farm in the foothills of the Hampshire downs.
Pure peppermint oil
When our mint fields have been harvested, the leaves are taken to our purpose-built distillery. The result is a rare single estate peppermint oil, with consistent quality and a soft, lingering taste. It has a cooler, more intense flavour and scent than other varieties - a property that also makes it highly-prized by aromatherapists - it's aroma is reminiscent of murray mint and is fuller bodied than american or chinese peppermint.
